Smudging with Sage
The botanical name for is Sage is Salvia which comes
from the Latin root
word Salvare which means "To Heal".
Smudging is a ceremony done to cleanse and purify any
person, object or sacred space. The burning of sage is
common among many healing and spiritual groups and is
defined as a “spiritual house cleansing”. The smoke of
burning sage literally changes the ionization polarity
of the air.

In addition to
white sage and
desert sage, materials
used for smudging include
sweetgrass, cedar, lavender,
pinon, juniper and even tobacco.
Begin by lighting the smudge stick, gently wave the
flame to extinguish it then gather the smoke with your
hand and draw it into the perimeter of your body. You
can also direct the smoke to any area by gently blowing
or use a ceremonial feather. Be sure to leave a door or
a window open to allow the smoke to escape. To learn
